The score has changed..... (Entry by Todd)
(Jul 25th, 2005) Lake Winnipeg 3, Scott and Matt 3…………………..
O.k. I am not the official score keeper but it seems to me that Lake Winnipeg has scored a couple of points over the last few days.
Scott and Matt are having computer problems, so they called me and asked if I would write a journal entry.
Scott and Matt have spent the last 2 days wind bound at Granite Quarry Cove, near an abandoned fishing camp. The camp is mentioned in “Distant Fires” a book about a canoe trip from Duluth to York Factory. They mention it because they find a lot of newspaper articles about a local axe murder. Scott says they are not scared at all. Nope. Not at all.
They have spent their time reorganizing the food pack (for the 45th time), writing in their journals, taking pictures, and sleeping. This morning after getting bored and stir crazy, they decided that they waves didn’t “look that big” and tore down camp to see how far they could go. The five foot swells they encountered told them that they should wait it out some more. So they turned around and proceeded to make camp exactly were they just took it down. Scott said it was fun, Matt sharpened the axe.
The duo seems to be in good spirits and talk at length about how awesome the sail has been on the lake. Sometimes they move so fast that they don’t even have to paddle, they just steer and hang on. Other times they paddle along and the sail just helps them go a little faster then they normally would.
They have not seen any wildlife on the lake, but hope to encounter some moose and bear. They haven’t seen any other people in the last 4 days except a random float plane that will fly overhead at times.
Scott and Matt hope to reach Berens River in a couple of days. Matt is excitedly anticipating this, because there is a bunch of gear waiting there for him from Kokatat and The Original Bug Shirt
Company.
As for me not much to report. I am working at Many Point at the Health Lodge, putting my EMT skills to work. Scott and Matt are keeping me busy with shipping gear to them, ordering maps and other expedition logistics. I am also starting to line up post-expedition events, such as a welcome home party for Scott and Matt, and slideshows to talk about the trip and show some of the great pictures. If you are interested in having a slide show for your group send me an email at todd@hudsonbayexpedition.com If you know a great place to have a party in the Twin City region let me know.
The sponsor I would like to thank today is YOU!!!!! So many people have been gracious enough to purchase t-shirts, books, Hudson Bay Bound, or just donate much needed money to the expedition. This greatly helps in making sure that we are successful in reaching York Factory. I know I can speak for Matt and Scott when I say that it is great knowing that so many people are following along, and when the going is tough, just thinking about all the people back “home” is a comforting thought.
I would also like to thank the following people, Llyod Cledwin for designing our web page. Brian Miller, for being our expedition manager. Brian has been busy sending out t-shirts and books all summer and we thank him for all his hard work. Chris Mielke has guided us on maintaining our website and is busy adding features like the journal entry so that it is easier to upload from the wilderness. This expedition has been a team effort and without the help of Brian, Llyod and Chris it would not be as successful as it has been. THANKS GUYS!!
Hopefully we can get the computer problems figured out, until then Matt and Scott will be calling me to update the journals. New pictures will have to wait until then.
